What unites them is their artistic intent: they exist to evoke an idea, a sensation, or an atmosphere rather than to replicate something found in nature.

Origin and Extraction

Abstract accords have no single botanical or animal origin. They are constructed in the perfumer's lab from combinations of synthetic molecules, naturals, and aromachemicals. Some mimic real-world sensations (the smell of rain on hot pavement, the scent of clean laundry), while others are entirely invented experiences. The raw materials can include anything from aldehydes and musks to specialized captive molecules developed by fragrance houses.

History and Culture

The concept of abstract accords emerged alongside the synthetic revolution in perfumery during the late 19th and early 20th century. Chanel No. 5 (1921) was arguably the first mainstream fragrance to celebrate abstraction through its generous use of aldehydes. The movement gained momentum through brands like Comme des Garcons, whose Odeur 53 (1998) explored industrial and everyday smells as legitimate fragrance territory. Today, houses like Escentric Molecules, Juliette Has a Gun, and countless indie brands continue to expand what a fragrance note can be.

Chemistry and Molecular Structure

The chemistry behind abstract accords is as diverse as the accords themselves. A metallic note might rely on compounds like Calone (watermelon ketone) or specific aldehyde blends. Ozone effects often use Helional or methyl pamplemousse. Clean or soapy impressions can come from synthetic musks like Galaxolide. The perfumer's art lies in combining these building blocks in ways that transcend their individual chemical identities and evoke something entirely new.
