Woody Notes
Bourbon Vetiver
Bourbon vetiver is the original, the archetype that defined what vetiver means in perfumery. Its scent is deep, dark, and magnificently smoky with a raw, almost tar-like earthiness that feels ancient and primal. There is a wonderful tension between its sharp, green-woody top notes and the rich, rooty darkness underneath. It is vetiver at its most intense and uncompromising, with a rugged elegance that has captivated perfumers for generations.

Origin and Extraction
Bourbon vetiver takes its name from the Ile Bourbon, the colonial name for Reunion, the French island in the Indian Ocean where vetiver cultivation took root in the 19th century. The volcanic soil and tropical climate produce roots with exceptional aromatic intensity. The extraction requires patience - the roots are typically aged for 18 to 24 months before steam distillation, and the resulting oil is often further matured to develop its full complexity.
History and Culture
Reunion's vetiver tradition stretches back to the early colonial period when French settlers recognized the aromatic potential of the grass growing wild on the volcanic island. For decades, Bourbon vetiver set the global quality standard and commanded the highest prices. Although production has since declined as Haiti and Indonesia expanded their output, Bourbon vetiver retains its legendary status among perfumers. The name 'Bourbon' in fragrance materials has become shorthand for uncompromising quality, just as it has for vanilla from the same island.
Chemistry and Molecular Structure
Bourbon vetiver oil is characterized by an exceptionally high concentration of vetivones, particularly alpha-vetivone and beta-vetivone, which are responsible for its intense smoky-earthy character. It also contains significant amounts of khusimone and zizanal, compounds that contribute its dark, woody depth. The volcanic terroir of Reunion produces roots with a unique mineral profile that influences the sesquiterpene biosynthesis, resulting in an oil with greater aromatic complexity than vetiver grown in non-volcanic soils.
