Origin and Extraction

Calabrian Bergamot comes exclusively from the narrow coastal strip of Calabria in southern Italy, where over 80% of the world's bergamot is grown. The microclimate between the Aspromonte mountains and the Ionian Sea creates ideal growing conditions that cannot be replicated elsewhere. The essential oil is cold-pressed from the rind of the fruit, typically harvested between November and March. A single tree yields only about 1.5 kg of oil per season.

History and Culture

Bergamot cultivation in Calabria dates back to the 18th century, and the region's identity is deeply intertwined with this fragrant fruit. The Consorzio del Bergamotto protects the quality and origin designation. Calabrian Bergamot was the defining ingredient of the original Eau de Cologne created by Johann Maria Farina in 1709, and it has remained at the heart of fine perfumery ever since. Chemistry and Molecular Structure

Calabrian Bergamot oil contains a distinctive ratio of linalyl acetate (30-45%) and linalool (10-20%) that gives it its superior aromatic complexity compared to bergamot from other regions. Limonene provides the citrus brightness, while trace compounds like bergaptene and bergamottin contribute subtle nuances. The higher linalyl acetate content compared to non-Calabrian bergamot is what gives it that characteristic sweet, floral-fruity sparkle.
