Cambodian Oud

Cambodian oud comes from Aquilaria crassna trees native to the forests of Cambodia, particularly the Pursat and Kompong Speu provinces. The trees must be infected by a specific mold to produce the precious resinous heartwood. Cambodia has a long tradition of oud harvesting, though wild trees have become increasingly scarce due to overharvesting. Today, plantation-grown Aquilaria crassna is becoming more common, with inoculation techniques used to trigger resin production.

Cambodia has been a center of the oud trade for centuries, with agarwood deeply woven into Khmer culture and spirituality. Historically, Cambodian oud was burned as incense in Buddhist temples and royal ceremonies. The Pursat region became legendary among oud connoisseurs for producing some of the finest, most fragrant agarwood in the world. Today, Cambodia's oud industry faces the challenge of balancing tradition with sustainability as wild resources diminish.

Cambodian oud from Aquilaria crassna has a distinctive chemical profile rich in sesquiterpenes, particularly agarospirol and jinkoh-eremol. What sets it apart is a higher concentration of fruity esters and sweet-smelling ketones compared to other oud varieties. These compounds are responsible for the characteristic honeyed, fruity top notes. The lower levels of sulfur compounds explain why Cambodian oud is perceived as smoother and less funky than its Indian counterpart.
