Cyclamen

Floral Notes
Cyclamen
Cyclamen is a cool, green-floral note with an elegant, aqueous transparency that feels like breathing in fresh morning air. It has a clean, slightly powdery quality with a distinctive waxy coolness and delicate sweetness. The scent is refined and understated, sitting somewhere between lily of the valley and violet with an icy, crystalline purity that makes it immediately recognizable.
Origin and Extraction
Cyclamen (Cyclamen persicum and related species) is a tuberous perennial native to the Mediterranean basin, from Southern Europe through to Iran. The flower produces virtually no extractable essential oil, making natural cyclamen one of the most elusive floral scents in perfumery. The note is almost always recreated synthetically, with headspace technology having been instrumental in capturing the flower's delicate volatile profile for accurate reproduction.
History and Culture
Cyclamen has been cultivated since antiquity, with the ancient Greeks and Romans growing it in their gardens. The name derives from the Greek 'kyklos' (circle), referring to the round tuber. In the Victorian language of flowers, cyclamen symbolized resignation and farewell, while in Japanese hanakotoba it represents modesty. The flower became hugely popular as a houseplant in 19th-century Europe, and its clean, sophisticated scent has inspired perfumers to create one of the most refined synthetic accords in modern perfumery.
Chemistry and Molecular Structure
The cyclamen accord in perfumery is built primarily around cyclamen aldehyde (also known as 3-(4-isopropylphenyl)-2-methylpropanal), a synthetic molecule discovered in the early 20th century that beautifully captures the flower's cool, waxy-floral character. This key aromatic compound is often blended with hydroxycitronellal for added freshness, lyral for a dewy quality, and traces of green leaf accords. Despite its name, cyclamen aldehyde was not directly derived from the flower but was found to perfectly evoke its scent profile.
