Edelweiss

Edelweiss (Leontopodium nivale) grows wild in the rocky limestone regions of the Alps, Pyrenees, and Carpathian mountains at altitudes between 1,800 and 3,000 meters. The flower is strictly protected throughout Europe, making wild harvesting illegal. Modern extraction relies on cultivated plants grown in alpine gardens, with CO2 extraction or solvent extraction used to capture the delicate scent. Some fragrance houses have also developed sustainable cultivation programs to obtain small quantities of precious edelweiss absolute.

Few flowers carry as much cultural symbolism as edelweiss. In Alpine tradition, young men would risk dangerous climbs to pick the flower for their beloved, making it a symbol of courage, devotion, and noble purity. It became the national symbol of Austria and Switzerland, appearing on coins, military insignia, and alpine club logos. The flower gained worldwide fame through the song 'Edelweiss' in The Sound of Music. Its name, from the German 'edel' (noble) and 'weiß' (white), perfectly captures its pristine character.

Edelweiss contains a unique blend of volatile compounds including various sesquiterpenes and oxygenated terpenes. Research has identified compounds like bisabolene derivatives and specific lactones that contribute to its soft, hay-sweet character. The flower also produces flavonoids and phenolic acids with notable antioxidant properties, which have made edelweiss extract valuable in cosmetics. In perfumery, the note is often reconstructed using combinations of coumarin, heliotropin, and soft herbal accords to approximate its gentle, woolly warmth.
