Grey Amber

Grey Amber takes its name and inspiration from ambergris (grey amber), a waxy substance formed in the digestive tract of sperm whales. Natural ambergris is found washed ashore after floating in the ocean for years, during which sun and saltwater transform it from a dark, foul-smelling mass into a light grey, beautifully aromatic material. Today, natural ambergris is extremely rare and expensive, so perfumers rely on synthetic alternatives that recreate its unique marine-animalic character.

Ambergris has been one of the most prized perfume ingredients for over a thousand years. Arab traders called it anbar, and it was worth more than gold in medieval Europe. It played a central role in the perfumery of the Islamic Golden Age and later became a defining ingredient in classic European parfums. The romance of grey amber - a mysterious substance born from the sea, transformed by years of ocean wandering - continues to captivate perfumers and fragrance lovers alike.

The key molecule of natural ambergris is Ambrein, a tricyclic triterpene alcohol that degrades through oxidation into the aromatic compounds that give ambergris its prized scent. The most important of these is Ambrox (also marketed as Ambroxan), which provides the warm, salty, skin-like quality. Synthetic recreations typically combine Ambroxan with marine accords, trace amounts of Civettone for animalic depth, and mineral-salty molecules to capture that distinctive oceanic warmth.
