Himalayan Cedar

Himalayan Cedar (Cedrus deodara) grows at elevations between 1,500 and 3,200 meters across the western Himalayas, from Afghanistan through northern Pakistan and India to western Nepal. The name 'deodara' derives from Sanskrit 'devadaru,' meaning timber of the gods. The essential oil is steam-distilled from the heartwood and sawdust, yielding a pale yellow to amber liquid with a softer, more refined character than other cedarwood oils. India and Nepal are the primary producers.

The Himalayan Cedar holds deep spiritual significance across South Asian cultures. In Hindu tradition, it is considered sacred to Shiva, and its wood has been used to build temples for millennia. Ancient Ayurvedic texts praise its oil for treating skin conditions and respiratory ailments. The majestic trees can live for over a thousand years, and specimens in the Himalayas are still treated with reverence by local communities. In perfumery, Himalayan Cedar represents the contemplative, spiritual side of the cedar family.

Himalayan Cedar oil is dominated by sesquiterpenes, with alpha-himachalene and beta-himachalene as primary components, similar to Atlas Cedar but in different proportions. What distinguishes it is a higher concentration of atlantone and the presence of deodarone, a ketone unique to this species that contributes its characteristic soft, slightly sweet warmth. The oil also contains himachalol, which provides its gentle, rounded woody quality that feels less assertive than the cedrol-rich Virginia Cedar.
