Javanol

Javanol is a synthetic captive molecule developed by Givaudan, discovered in 1996 by chemist Jerzy Bajgrowicz. It emerged from Givaudan's intensive research program to find superior sandalwood alternatives during the sandalwood crisis of the 1990s, when natural East Indian sandalwood oil became increasingly scarce due to overharvesting and strict export regulations from India. As a Givaudan captive, it is available only to Givaudan perfumers.

Javanol's story is inseparable from the sandalwood crisis. By the mid-1990s, the fragrance industry faced a genuine emergency: Mysore sandalwood oil, once the gold standard for perfumery, was becoming prohibitively expensive and ecologically unsustainable. All major fragrance houses - Givaudan, IFF, Firmenich, Symrise - raced to develop synthetic alternatives in what became known as the "sandalwood arms race." Javanol emerged as one of the most successful outcomes, proving that synthetic chemistry could not just replace but sometimes surpass nature.

Javanol has the molecular formula C15H26O and a molecular weight of 222.3 (CAS 198404-98-7). Its IUPAC name is [1-methyl-2-[(1,2,2-trimethylbicyclo[3.1.0]hex-3-yl)methyl]cyclopropyl]methanol. The molecule features a rigid cyclopropyl spacer and an alcohol functional group, a design that gives it an exceptionally low odor threshold and remarkable receptor-binding efficiency - closely mimicking how natural beta-santalol interacts with our olfactory receptors.
