Origin and Extraction

Mahonial is a captive molecule developed by Givaudan, introduced in 2014. Its name pays homage to Mahonia japonica, a small evergreen shrub whose yellow flowers emit a surprisingly diffusive muguet scent - sometimes called the 'lily of the valley bush'. Givaudan created Mahonial as a modern muguet building block, and it has gained particular importance since the EU banned the classic muguet molecules Lyral (2022) and Lilial, leaving perfumers in urgent need of safe, high-performing alternatives.

History and Culture

The story of Mahonial is closely tied to one of perfumery's biggest regulatory upheavals. When the EU banned Lyral and Lilial due to skin sensitization concerns, perfumers lost two of their most beloved muguet molecules overnight. Mahonial, already in Givaudan's captive palette since 2014, suddenly became critically important as a safe and even more persistent replacement. It is four times more powerful than Lyral, meaning smaller amounts achieve the same lush floral effect - a welcome improvement for both sustainability and creative flexibility.

Chemistry and Molecular Structure

Mahonial's chemical name is (4E)-9-hydroxy-5,9-dimethyl-4-decenal. It is structurally related to Lyral, sharing a similar molecular framework but with key modifications that improve its safety profile while preserving - and even enhancing - its olfactory performance. With an odor threshold of just 0.025 ng/L of air, it is remarkably potent, allowing perfumers to achieve rich muguet effects at very low concentrations.
