Muscenone

Muscenone delivers a beautifully elegant musk that feels both powdery and skin-like, with a naturalness that many synthetic musks lack. It has a soft, clean, slightly animalic warmth reminiscent of classic nitro musks like Musk Ketone, but with greater sophistication and none of the environmental concerns. Subtle woody and iris-like facets add depth, while a gentle cosmetic sweetness makes it feel comforting and intimate - like the scent of warm, clean skin.
Origin and Extraction
Muscenone is a synthetic macrocyclic ketone musk developed by Firmenich, part of the company's legendary expertise in musk chemistry that spans over nine decades. It is produced entirely through laboratory synthesis and has no natural counterpart. Structurally related to muscone - the key odorant of natural deer musk - Muscenone offers a modern, cruelty-free interpretation of this ancient and precious scent family.
History and Culture
Muscenone belongs to the family of macrocyclic musks - large-ring molecules that represent one of perfumery's greatest chemical achievements. While nitro musks dominated the early 20th century and polycyclic musks the mid-century, macrocyclic musks like Muscenone offered something precious: a musk character that closely resembles the natural original without the ethical and environmental problems. Firmenich, often called the "House of Musk," has been at the forefront of this evolution for decades.
Chemistry and Molecular Structure
Muscenone has the molecular formula C16H28O and a molecular weight of 236 g/mol. Its chemical name is 3-methyl-5-cyclopentadecen-1-one (CAS 82356-51-2). As a macrocyclic ketone, it features a large 15-membered carbon ring with an unsaturated E/Z double bond that contributes to both its olfactory complexity and remarkable tenacity. This ring size is critical - too small and the musk character disappears, too large and it becomes waxy rather than musky.
