Omani Frankincense

Omani Frankincense comes from Boswellia sacra trees that grow in the Dhofar region of southern Oman, particularly around the Wadi Dawkah area, a UNESCO World Heritage Site. The highest grade is called 'Royal Green Hojari,' prized for its translucent, pale green tears with an exceptionally refined scent. The resin is harvested from April through June during the 'khareef' season by making careful incisions in the bark. Oman's strict grading system distinguishes multiple quality levels, with the finest reserved for the Sultan's court and luxury markets.

Oman and frankincense are inseparably linked. The ancient city of Ubar, sometimes called the 'Atlantis of the Sands,' was a major frankincense trading hub. The Dhofar frankincense trade route connected Oman to Mesopotamia, Egypt, Rome, and China for over 3,000 years. In Omani culture, burning frankincense is a daily ritual of hospitality, purification, and celebration. The Sultan Qaboos Grand Mosque in Muscat uses Omani frankincense in its daily incense burning. Today, Oman protects its frankincense heritage as a matter of national pride, with the Boswellia sacra trees of Dhofar recognized as a national treasure.

Omani Boswellia sacra resin has a distinctive chemical profile characterized by high levels of incensole and incensole acetate, compounds that are largely responsible for its deep, spiritual character and have been shown to have psychoactive properties affecting mood. It also contains significant concentrations of alpha-pinene and octyl acetate, but in lower proportions than Somalian varieties. The boswellic acid content is among the highest of any frankincense origin, contributing to its rich, balsamic body. The Royal Hojari grade is particularly concentrated in these key compounds.
