Herbs & Green Notes
Peppermint
Peppermint is the bold, ice-cold sibling in the mint family. Its scent hits with an immediate blast of menthol that feels almost crystalline, followed by a slightly peppery, camphoraceous body and a sweet herbal finish. Compared to spearmint, peppermint is sharper, more intense, and considerably more cooling, with an almost metallic brightness that cuts through any composition like a fresh arctic breeze.
A variety of Mint
Origin and Extraction
Peppermint (Mentha piperita) is a natural hybrid of watermint and spearmint, first described in 1753 by Carl Linnaeus. It thrives in moist, temperate climates and is cultivated on a massive scale in the United States (particularly Oregon and Washington), India, and China. The essential oil is extracted through steam distillation of the flowering herb, yielding a clear to pale yellow oil with an exceptionally high menthol content of 30 to 50 percent.
History and Culture
Peppermint has been used medicinally for thousands of years, with dried leaves found in Egyptian pyramids dating back to 1000 BC. The ancient Greeks and Romans crowned themselves with peppermint wreaths at feasts and used it to flavor wines. Its commercial cultivation began in earnest in 18th-century England, and by the 19th century, peppermint oil had become one of the most important essential oils in both medicine and flavoring. In perfumery, it gained traction in the 20th century as part of the aromatic-fresh movement.
Chemistry and Molecular Structure
Peppermint oil is dominated by menthol (30-50%), menthone (14-32%), and menthyl acetate (3-10%). Menthol is a cyclic monoterpene alcohol that activates the TRPM8 cold receptor in the skin and nasal passages, producing its signature cooling sensation. The higher menthol-to-carvone ratio is what distinguishes peppermint from spearmint chemically. Additional trace compounds like menthofuran, 1,8-cineole, and limonene contribute to its complex, layered freshness.
