Origin and Extraction
Petalia is a captive molecule created by Givaudan in 2006 as an advanced analog of Peonile, their earlier peony molecule. While Peonile had been available to the wider fragrance industry, Petalia was kept exclusively for Givaudan's own perfumers, giving them a distinct creative advantage in crafting peony and rose accords. It was developed in Givaudan's research laboratories as part of their ongoing quest to capture the elusive scent of fresh peony flowers.
History and Culture
Peony has long been one of perfumery's most desired yet most difficult flowers to capture. Unlike rose or jasmine, peony yields virtually no essential oil, so its scent must be reconstructed synthetically. Givaudan's journey began with Peonile and culminated in Petalia - a molecule that brought perfumers closer than ever to the true scent of fresh peony petals. Since its introduction, Petalia has become a go-to ingredient for Givaudan perfumers creating the soft, romantic florals that define much of contemporary fragrance.
Chemistry and Molecular Structure
Petalia is chemically known as 2-cyclohexylidene-2-(o-tolyl)acetonitrile. It belongs to the nitrile family of aroma chemicals, sharing the acetonitrile functional group with its predecessor Peonile. The cyclohexylidene ring combined with the ortho-methylphenyl (o-tolyl) group creates its characteristic peony-rose scent profile. Compared to Peonile, the structural modifications in Petalia result in enhanced floral character with added fruity nuances.
