Resinous Notes
Somalian Frankincense
Somalian Frankincense is the brightest, most citrus-forward member of the frankincense family. Where Omani frankincense tends toward deep spirituality and Eritrean varieties lean smoky, Somalian frankincense sparkles with a clean, almost lemony freshness layered over a translucent resinous base. It has an uplifting, luminous quality - less church incense, more sunlit terrace. The overall impression is cleaner and more transparent than other frankincense origins.
A variety of Frankincense
Origin and Extraction
Somalian Frankincense comes from Boswellia sacra and Boswellia frereana trees that grow in the arid highlands of northern Somalia and the semi-autonomous region of Puntland. The resin is harvested by making shallow cuts in the bark, allowing the milky sap to flow out and harden into tear-shaped droplets over several weeks. Somalia is one of the world's largest producers of frankincense, and the harvesting traditions have been passed down through generations of nomadic communities.
History and Culture
Somalia - part of the ancient Land of Punt - has been a center of the frankincense trade for over 5,000 years. Egyptian Queen Hatshepsut sent expeditions to these shores specifically to acquire frankincense. The Somali frankincense trade connected East Africa to ancient Egypt, Rome, and the entire Mediterranean world, making it one of history's most important aromatic trade goods. Today, frankincense remains vital to Somalia's economy and cultural identity, though sustainable harvesting practices are increasingly important as global demand grows.
Chemistry and Molecular Structure
Somalian Frankincense, particularly from Boswellia frereana, has a distinctive chemical profile rich in alpha-pinene and limonene - the terpenes responsible for its characteristic citrusy brightness. It contains lower levels of incensole and incensole acetate compared to Omani Boswellia sacra, which explains its cleaner, less smoky profile. Octyl acetate contributes fruity-fresh facets, while boswellic acids provide the underlying resinous warmth that anchors the brighter top notes.
