The story

EX NIHILO was founded in Paris in 2013 by Sylvie Loday, Olivier Royère and Benoît Verdier. Its Latin name refers to something created from nothing and sums up the trio’s intent: a French fragrance house without a historical archive, but with a clear view of the present and future.

The house develops its concepts with different perfumers and describes the collaboration as creative carte blanche. Classical high perfumery meets modern natural extracts, synthetic materials and the Osmologue, a precision system used to personalize selected creations.

01 · The founding trio

Three perspectives, one shared decision

Sylvie Loday, Olivier Royère and Benoît Verdier founded EX NIHILO in Paris in 2013. Their responsibilities are complementary and, according to Loday’s direct account, clearly divided: she leads strategic expansion, product vision, innovation and the retail roadmap. Royère drives the business, numbers, structure and growth. Verdier shapes the creative side and stays close to communities and partners.

Major decisions are still made by the trio together. This division of responsibilities helps explain why technology, design and business do not appear as separate subjects at EX NIHILO, but meet at the concept stage of a creation.

02 · The perfumers

Carte blanche is collaboration, not the absence of a brief

The idea begins with the house, while the olfactory response comes from each perfumer. Official product pages deliberately show different creative hands: Jordi Fernández composed Blue Talisman, Quentin Bisch created Fleur Narcotique, and Louise Turner developed Spiky Muse.

No single house perfumer is therefore the centre of the brand. Continuity comes from the founders’ creative direction, freedom in the use of materials and a recurring interest in contrasts between French craft, contemporary molecules, design and technology.

03 · The Osmologue

Precision becomes part of the boutique ritual

At selected flagship boutiques, EX NIHILO uses the Osmologue for personalized Signature versions. The exclusive system weighs and blends fragrance materials with high precision. Available combinations are selected with perfumers so that they complement the original composition.

On demand, these versions are weighed, filtered, bottled and finished by hand in the boutique. The Osmologue does not replace the perfumer. It translates a prepared olfactory selection into a reproducible and personal retail experience.
