The story

J-Scent launched in Tokyo in 2017 as an in-house collection from the Japanese fragrance house LUZ. Founder and creator Tetsu Amada assembled a team spanning perfumery, evaluation, planning, design, direction and production.

Rather than treating Japan as a distant cliché, the collection looks to familiar cultural practices, natural imagery and scents from everyday life. Those ideas are developed collectively and manufactured in the company’s own Japanese laboratories and factories.

A Japanese perspective on perfume

When J-Scent appeared in 2017, LUZ had already spent years developing its own fragrances and building an internal laboratory and production structure. The new collection was not conceived to repeat familiar images of Japan. It began by asking which scents actually accompany life in contemporary Japan and which memories, customs or places they carry.

02 · Culture in everyday life

Experience rather than symbol

The subjects range from roasted tea in Roasted Green Tea and sparkling soda in Ramune to familiar objects such as Paper Soap. Sumo Wrestler likewise starts from a specific cultural scent, the traditional hair oil worn by wrestlers. The result is a collection that describes Japan through recognizable sensory impressions.

03 · Teamwork and manufacturing

From concept to finished bottle

LUZ describes development as a collaboration among perfumery, evaluation, planning, design, direction and production. The company operates its own laboratories and factories in Japan, keeping several stages from fragrance concept to packaging in-house. A public sign of international recognition followed in 2019, when Black Leather received the Best New Niche Fragrance award at the Pure Beauty Global Awards.
