Bulgarian Rose

Bulgarian rose from the famous Rose Valley carries a deep, rich, and slightly spicy character that many consider the gold standard for Damask rose oil. It has a magnificent depth with green, almost tea-like top notes that give way to a full, honeyed heart and a warm, faintly peppery dry-down. This is a rose that feels serious and substantial - less immediately sweet than Turkish rose, with an elegant restraint that rewards patient wearing.

Origin and Extraction
The Rose Valley near Kazanlak in central Bulgaria has been producing some of the world's finest rose oil since the 17th century. The unique microclimate - sheltered by mountains, with cool nights and morning dew - creates ideal conditions for Rosa damascena. Bulgarian rose otto is produced through traditional steam distillation, a two-stage process where the distillation water is re-distilled to capture every last trace of precious oil.
History and Culture
Bulgaria's rose oil industry was established by Ottoman traders in the 17th century, and the Rose Valley quickly gained a reputation for producing oil of unmatched quality. The annual Rose Festival in Kazanlak, held each June, is one of Bulgaria's most cherished traditions, featuring the election of a Rose Queen and ritual picking of the first blooms at dawn. Bulgarian rose oil became so significant to the national identity that the damask rose is featured on Bulgarian currency.
Chemistry and Molecular Structure
Bulgarian rose otto is particularly rich in citronellol and geraniol, but what distinguishes it chemically is its higher proportion of nerol and certain trace sesquiterpenes that contribute its characteristic spicy, slightly peppery undertone. The cool mountain climate of the Rose Valley slows the roses' metabolism, allowing more complex aromatic compounds to develop in the petals. This results in an oil with greater molecular complexity than roses grown in warmer climates.
