Woody Notes
Indian Oud
Indian oud is the most intense and challenging variety of oud, known for its powerfully animalic, barnyard-like opening that can be almost shocking on first encounter. Beneath that bold exterior lies extraordinary complexity - deep leather, fermented fruit, earthy soil, and a dark sweetness that unfolds over hours. For oud lovers, this is the pinnacle. The scent is unapologetically raw and primal, with a richness and depth that no other oud origin can match.

Origin and Extraction
Indian oud is derived from Aquilaria malaccensis, native to the northeastern states of India, particularly Assam, Meghalaya, and Manipur. The Assamese tradition of oud distillation goes back centuries, and the region remains a hub for some of the finest oud oils in the world. Wild Aquilaria malaccensis is now critically endangered, listed under CITES Appendix II. Extraction involves lengthy steam distillation of infected heartwood, sometimes lasting several days to capture the full spectrum of aromatic compounds.
History and Culture
In Indian culture, agarwood holds deep spiritual significance. It is mentioned in ancient Sanskrit texts as one of the most precious aromatics, burned in temples and used in Ayurvedic medicine. Assam's oud distillation tradition has been passed down through generations of families who guard their techniques carefully. The scarcity of wild Indian agarwood has driven prices to extraordinary levels - premium Indian oud oil can cost tens of thousands of dollars per kilogram, making it truly liquid gold.
Chemistry and Molecular Structure
Indian oud from Aquilaria malaccensis has a uniquely complex chemical fingerprint dominated by high concentrations of sesquiterpenes and chromone derivatives. The animalic character comes from sulfur-containing compounds and indole derivatives that are more abundant than in other oud origins. Key molecules include agarospirol, jinkoh-eremol, and guaianol, alongside higher levels of 2-(2-phenylethyl)chromones. This molecular richness is what gives Indian oud its extraordinary longevity and evolving scent profile.
