Woody Notes
Mysore Sandalwood
Mysore sandalwood is the gold standard against which all sandalwood is measured. Its scent is extraordinarily creamy, rich, and buttery with a luminous warmth that seems to glow from within. There is a milky, almost lactonic softness to it, layered with subtle honeyed sweetness and the faintest whisper of rose-like florality. The depth and smoothness are unmatched - it wraps the skin like liquid cashmere. Once you have smelled authentic Mysore sandalwood, you understand why it became legendary.

Origin and Extraction
Mysore sandalwood comes from Santalum album trees grown in the Karnataka region of southern India, centered around the city of Mysore. The trees need 30-60 years of growth before the heartwood develops its full aromatic potential. Due to rampant overharvesting throughout the 20th century, the Indian government declared Santalum album a protected species, and wild harvesting is now strictly controlled. The oil is extracted through steam distillation of the heartwood and roots, yielding a thick, golden liquid of extraordinary richness.
History and Culture
Mysore sandalwood is woven into the fabric of Indian civilization. For thousands of years, it has been central to Hindu temple rituals, carved into sacred objects, and used in Ayurvedic medicine. The Kingdom of Mysore built much of its wealth on the sandalwood trade, and the wood was once considered a royal monopoly. The infamous sandalwood smuggler Veerappan made international headlines in the 1990s, highlighting just how valuable this resource had become. Today, government-controlled plantations attempt to sustain this precious heritage.
Chemistry and Molecular Structure
What makes Mysore sandalwood chemically superior is its exceptionally high santalol content - genuine Mysore oil contains 80-90% alpha- and beta-santalol, significantly more than other sandalwood species. Alpha-santalol is responsible for the characteristic creamy, milky softness, while beta-santalol contributes the woody warmth and depth. The high santalol concentration also explains the oil's remarkable longevity on skin. This chemical profile has proven extremely difficult to replicate synthetically, which is why perfumers still consider the natural oil irreplaceable.
