Nympheal offers an opulent, fresh muguet character with watery-floral facets and a distinctive linden blossom accent. It is extraordinarily diffusive - a single smelling strip can fill an entire room with its luminous floral aura. The scent feels aquatic and green at the same time, evoking images of water lilies floating on a still pond. Compared to the now-banned Lilial, it has a more natural, more complex character with creamy volume and impressive depth.

Origin and Extraction

Nympheal was developed by Givaudan and existed as a captive molecule for years before being made available to the broader fragrance industry. Its name was inspired by Claude Monet's famous series of water lily paintings - 'Nympheas' in French - a poetic nod to the molecule's watery, floral character. It first appeared in Kilian's Woman In Gold (2017), where it helped create the fragrance's luminous floral signature.

History and Culture

Nympheal's rise to prominence is a story of necessity meeting innovation. When the EU banned Lyral and Lilial - two molecules that had shaped the muguet accord in countless classic perfumes - the industry faced a crisis. Entire fragrance formulas had to be reformulated overnight. Nympheal emerged as the most faithful and most powerful replacement, not merely filling the gap but opening entirely new creative possibilities. Developed according to Green Chemistry principles and fully biodegradable, it also represents a new standard for responsible ingredient design.

Chemistry and Molecular Structure

Nympheal's chemical name is 3-(4-isobutyl-2-methylphenyl)propanal, with the molecular formula C14H20O and CAS number 1637294-12-2. It is a propanal-type muguet aldehyde, belonging to the same structural family as the banned Lilial and Lyral but with a significantly improved safety profile. Its odor threshold of just 0.021 ng/L of air makes it one of the most potent muguet molecules ever created. Nympheal was designed following OECD biodegradability guidelines and Givaudan's Safe by Design approach.
