The Damask rose is the undisputed queen of perfumery roses. Its scent is rich, deep, and honeyed with a lush, almost jammy sweetness that feels both opulent and timeless. Compared to other rose varieties, it strikes a beautiful balance between freshness and warmth, with subtle spicy and green facets hiding beneath its velvety petals.

Origin and Extraction
Rosa damascena thrives in the warm climates of Turkey, Bulgaria, and Morocco, where it has been cultivated for centuries. The flowers must be hand-picked at dawn, when their oil content is highest - it takes roughly 3,500 kilograms of petals to produce just one kilogram of rose otto through steam distillation. Solvent extraction yields the darker, more intense rose absolute, capturing facets that distillation cannot.
History and Culture
Named after Damascus, Syria, the Damask rose has been cultivated since antiquity and was likely brought to Europe by Crusaders in the 13th century. It holds deep significance in Persian poetry and Islamic culture, where rose water has been used in religious ceremonies and cuisine for over a thousand years. The annual rose harvest festivals in Isparta and Kazanlak remain cultural highlights that celebrate this precious flower.
Chemistry and Molecular Structure
The signature scent of Damask rose comes from a complex interplay of citronellol, geraniol, and nerol, which provide its classic rosy sweetness. What truly sets it apart is its high concentration of damascenone and beta-damascone, powerful aromatic compounds that contribute its characteristic deep, fruity-honeyed richness even in trace amounts. Rose oxide adds the fresh, green-metallic sparkle in the top notes.
