Woody Notes
Laotian Oud
Laotian oud is celebrated for its exceptionally smooth, honeyed character that sits somewhere between the fruity sweetness of Cambodian oud and the resinous depth of Vietnamese varieties. It opens with a gorgeous honeycomb sweetness, almost caramel-like, with a gentle woodiness that feels incredibly refined. The dry-down reveals warm, slightly floral notes with a clean balsamic finish. Of all oud varieties, Laotian oud is perhaps the most elegant and polished.
A variety of Oud
Origin and Extraction
Laotian oud comes from Aquilaria trees growing in the remote forests of Laos, primarily Aquilaria crassna. The country's relative isolation has helped preserve old-growth forests longer than in neighboring countries, though wild stocks are now declining rapidly. Laotian distillers have developed their own techniques over generations, often using slow, low-temperature distillation that preserves the delicate sweet and honeyed notes. Small-scale plantation cultivation is expanding in provinces like Champasak and Savannakhet.
History and Culture
Laos has a quieter but no less significant oud tradition than its Southeast Asian neighbors. Agarwood has been traded along ancient routes connecting Laos to China and Vietnam for centuries. In Lao Buddhist culture, agarwood incense accompanies important ceremonies and meditation practices. The country's oud gained international recognition primarily in the last two decades, as collectors and perfumers discovered the exceptional quality of oils from old-growth Laotian forests. This discovery has been both a blessing and a challenge for local communities.
Chemistry and Molecular Structure
Laotian oud shares the sesquiterpene backbone common to all Aquilaria crassna oils but stands out through elevated levels of sweet-smelling oxygenated sesquiterpenes. The honeyed character is attributed to specific ketone and aldehyde compounds, while lower concentrations of indoles and sulfur compounds give it a cleaner profile than Indian varieties. The slow distillation methods traditional in Laos tend to preserve more of these volatile sweet compounds, contributing to the oil's distinctive refinement.
