May Rose

Rosa centifolia blooms for just a few weeks each May in the fields around Grasse, in the south of France. The petals are too delicate for steam distillation, so they are processed through solvent extraction to create rose absolute - a thick, dark, intensely fragrant material. A single kilogram of absolute requires roughly 600 kilograms of fresh petals, and the dwindling farmland around Grasse makes this one of the most expensive natural ingredients in existence.

The rose fields of Grasse have been legendary since the 16th century, when the region transitioned from leather tanning to perfume production. May rose became the crown jewel of Grasse's floral harvests, and to this day, major houses like Chanel maintain their own rose fields there to secure this precious supply. The annual Fete de la Rose in Grasse honors the tradition with parades and flower-throwing celebrations that have continued for generations.

May rose absolute has a distinctly different molecular fingerprint from Damask rose otto. It is rich in phenylethyl alcohol, which provides its characteristic honeyed sweetness, while containing lower levels of citronellol. The solvent extraction method preserves heavier wax molecules and trace compounds like rose ketones that would be destroyed by steam distillation, resulting in that unmistakable thick, warm, waxy quality that makes May rose so prized.
